When it comes to roofing, most people think about shingles, tile, or metal, but there are many other important components to a durable and lasting roof.

Decking – The decking, sometimes called the roof deck or sheathing covers your home’s trusses and insulation. It is the first “outside” layer of your roof and is generally plywood or OSB. It is critical that this base is free from any water damage or deterioration since all the roof materials will be nailed to it. We will examine your decking to be certain it is in good condition and repair or replace any defective material.

Felt Paper – also called underlayment, covers the decking to provide a layer of protection from water penetration. Typically, 30 lb. asphalt-covered felt paper or synthetic felt paper is used. Check out the video to see how the two compare.

Ice and Water Shield is another important component in your roof system is. This water-proof rubbery membrane sticks to the surface it is applied to, to create a weather-proof seal. It is used to protect vulnerable areas like valleys, and around skylights, vent pipes, and chimneys.

Flashing is used to guide water away from valleys, any roof penetrations like chimneys, skylights, or vents, and areas where your roof and a wall meet such as a dormer. It is typically made from aluminum but can be made from other materials like galvanized steel and copper, among others. Check out the video to learn more.

All these things will protect your roof from the outside elements, but the right ventilation is essential in protecting your home from moisture and attic heat build-up on the inside. With proper ventilation, you will reduce condensation and the decay it causes, reduce mold, and prevent ice build-up on your roof. The most common form of ventilation is called a ridge vent. Installed at the roof’s peak, the ridge vent allows heat and moisture to escape from your attic space. Our roofing specialists will help you determine if this or another type of ventilation is best for your home.

Finally, adding asphalt shinglestile, or metal roofing will complete your roof with the protection, look, and style you want, adding endurance and lasting beauty to your home for years to come.
